Spooky Season, Scary Scams: 4 Ways to Protect Yourself From Fraud This October

October is full of treats, costumes and spooky fun, but scammers can bring some unwanted scares. As scams and fraud become more convincing, knowing what to look for can help you protect your personal and financial information.

Here are 4 simple ways to avoid getting tricked by a scam:

👻 Be cautious with unexpected messages

Be careful with unexpected texts, emails or phone calls asking you to click a link, open an attachment or provide personal information. If something feels suspicious, take a moment to verify it before responding.

🎃Don’t fall for a “scary-good” deal

If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be especially cautious of unexpected prizes, giveaways, refunds or deals that require you to provide payment or personal information.

🕷️Protect your information

Never share your passwords, PINs, personal information or verification codes with someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Legitimate organizations will not ask you to provide sensitive information through suspicious messages.

🦇Verify before you respond

Not sure who’s contacting you? Don’t use the phone number, email address or link they provided. Instead, contact the company directly using contact information you know is legitimate.
